Does the Invasive Predator Mnemiopsis leidyi A. Agassiz, 1868 Control Copepod Abundances in the Seine Estuary?

چکیده

The indigenous ctenophore Pleurobrachia pileus (O.F. Müller, 1776) was common in the coastal waters of English Channel early 1990s and showed very abundant populations downstream part Seine estuary. In 2005, non-indigenous Mnemiopsis leidyi A. Agassiz, 1868, a species native to Western Atlantic, reported for first time Europe Norwegian fjords Le Havre harbour (Seine estuary, France). More recently, 2017, both were recorded during suprabenthos zooplankton sampling estuary along downstream-upstream transect. Both show more May than September. Conversely, copepods spatial distribution depending on distribution, with low copepod abundances being associated high abundances, while are where ctenophores absent or display abundances. We propose that intense predation is related changes hydrological conditions over two last decades. This may explain dramatic decline abundance which could have negative effect its nursery role.

Specific immune priming in the invasive ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi.

Specific immune priming enables an induced immune response upon repeated pathogen encounter. As a functional analogue to vertebrate immune memory, such adaptive plasticity has been described, for instance, in insects and crustaceans. However, towards the base of the metazoan tree our knowledge about the existence of specific immune priming becomes scattered. Here, we exposed the invasive ctenop...

Abundance, horizontal and vertical distribution of the invasive ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi in the central Balitc

The distribution and abundance of the invasive ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi in the Bornholm Basin, an important spawning ground of several fish stocks, and in adjacent areas in the central Baltic Sea was studied in November 2007. The study showed that M. leidyi were relatively small (body length 18.6 ± 7.6 mm) and they were patchily distributed over a large part of the investigated area. Specim...

Escape of the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi from the scyphomedusa predator Chrysaora quinquecirrha

The ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi A. Agassiz, 1865 is known to be eaten by the scyphomedusan Chrysaora quinquecirrha (Desor, 1948), which can control populations of ctenophores in the tributaries of Chesapeake Bay. In the summer of 1995, we videotaped interactions in large aquaria in order to determine whether M. leidyi was always captured after contact with medusae. Surprisingly, M. leidyi esca...

Regulation and regeneration in the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi.

Lobate ctenophores (tentaculates) generally exhibit a remarkable ability to regenerate missing structures as adults. On the other hand, their embryos exhibit a highly mosaic behavior when cut into halves or when specific cells are ablated. These deficient embryos do not exhibit embryonic regulation, and generate incomplete adult body plans. Under certain conditions, however, these deficient ani...

Invading Mnemiopsis leidyi as a potential threat to Baltic fish

The occurrence of the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi as a new invasive species in the Baltic Sea and the potential consequences for fish stock recruitment was investigated in spring 2007. The study focused on the Bornholm Basin, which serves as the major spawning ground for cod and sprat, the commercially most important fish stocks in the Baltic. The distribution pattern of M. leidyi revealed a s...
